New Friendship charter
school summer and after school parternship
During the Summer of 2007
and the Fall 2007 and Spring 2008 school year, IAHHE provided curriculum
enrichment in hip hop education for the Friendship Public Charter School. We conducted
freestyle ciphers, taught students the basics of deejaying, emceeing, and
grafitti art.
We also put hip hop in an
historical context through the study and exploration of iconographic persons in
hip hop history and in the history of the civil rights movement.
The program in the summer
was an all day enrichment at the Blow Pierce campus and the after school
program was in the evening at the same school and at Woodridge Elementary
School.
We focused mainly on middle
school students and held spirited discussions on music, identity, race,
politics, crime, relationships, and the meaning of art.
Each program ending in a
culminating presentation of the students work during the program and also gave
students a chance to perform their chosen hip hop form of expression.
In all, the summer program
enrollment served 80 students and the after school program served 40 students.
We look forward to this year's partnership with Friendship Charter School and to continue to acquaint the next generation with a deeper understanding of the positive aspects of hip hop art and culture.
